This isn't a preference or a tiebreaker — it's a hard gate that sits before the academic review even starts, and it means the real first step of applying happens months before the portal opens, not after.

The one thing you need before you apply

Finding and securing that supervisor typically takes six to twelve months of its own, well ahead of your country's embassy deadline. You'll need to identify a specific research group at a Swiss university, ETH Zurich, EPFL, a university of applied sciences, or one of the four public research institutes in the ETH Domain, contact the professor directly, and get their written agreement plus their CV before you can submit anything. Applicants who start looking for a supervisor after the portal opens are, in practice, starting too late for that cycle.

What it actually pays and what it doesn't

The scholarship provides a monthly stipend of CHF 2,450 for the 2027-2028 cycle, health insurance premiums for scholars from outside the EU/EFTA, a one-off CHF 600 grant toward a rental deposit, a half-fare Swiss public transport card, and a return flight allowance for non-EU/EFTA scholars. What it deliberately does not cover is tuition or semester fees — typically CHF 600-2,000 per semester, the scholar's own responsibility, or the host institution's — nor conference or fieldwork costs. The Swiss government's own materials are explicit that this is a living stipend, "not a salary," and applying is entirely free — a point worth flagging because scholarship-scam sites do sometimes charge a fee for a program that genuinely costs nothing to apply to.

Who's eligible

Applicants must have been born after 31 December 1991 and must hold, or be about to complete, a master's degree by 31 July 2027 (30 June for ETH Zurich applicants specifically). The programme gives preference to applicants who have not previously studied or researched in Switzerland, consistent with its purpose of building new international academic connections rather than extending existing ones. Beyond the doctoral and postdoctoral research track, a separate Art Scholarship funds one-year, extendable-to-21-month master's study at Swiss conservatories and art schools, but only for applicants from a narrower list of eligible countries — check this separately if art or design is your field.

How selection works

1. Identify a Swiss research group in your field and secure a professor's written agreement to supervise you, along with their CV
2. Prepare a detailed research plan with a realistic timeline, a personal CV, and two professor recommendation or appraisal letters (a portfolio instead, for Art Scholarship applicants)
3. Apply entirely online through the GO ESKAS portal — no paper or email applications are accepted
4. Submit through your home country's Swiss embassy or diplomatic representation, which conducts a preliminary check before forwarding your file
5. The Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students, made up of Swiss university professors, reviews applications on three weighted factors: your own profile, the quality of the proposed project, and the potential for research cooperation
6. Results are communicated by the end of May of the award year, with the programme starting that September

Common reasons applications fail

The recurring pattern across guidance from Swiss universities and past scholars is not usually academic weakness — it's structural. Applying without a confirmed supervisor is the single most common reason a file doesn't progress, since it fails the eligibility gate before the committee even assesses the research plan. A research proposal that reads as generic, rather than clearly built around the specific supervisor and lab you've named, is the next most common weak point. And missing your specific country's embassy deadline — which is set locally and varies by several months across different Swiss diplomatic posts — knocks out applicants who assumed a single global date applied.

What makes it different

Compared with the ETH Zurich Excellence Scholarship, which is a single university's own award folded into its admissions process, this is the federal government's scholarship, open across every Swiss institution rather than one campus, and open to a genuinely broad list of over 180 countries rather than a restricted set of partner nations. The trade-off is that nothing about the process is centralised the way a university admissions office is — you are building the academic relationship yourself, from scratch, before the government gets involved at all.
